The 8th edition of the International Conference on Security, Democracy & Cities is taking place in Brussels, Belgium, on 20, 21 and 22 March 2024.

Efus and Safe.brussels

This year EFUS partnered up with safe.brussels to organise the international conference on Security, Democracy & Cities. The conference brings together over 100 speakers and 800 participants from 150 cities and regions across Europe and the world.

It offers a unique opportunity to take part in round tables, workshops, meetings and field visits to promote exchanges and mutual learning in the field of urban safety and crime prevention.

Paul van Soomeren will speak in one of the thematic sessions, “Protecting freedom of expression and diversity in shared public spaces,” which will take place on Thursday, the 21st, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Paul van Soomeren

Paul co-founded DSP-groep and works with the Dutch Institute for Safe and Secure Spaces (DIS). He is the Director of the Board of the International CPTED Association and chair of the CEN working group making European Standards on Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED, see CEN/TS 14383-2:2022).

CPTED

The European CPTED approach focuses on local/regional governance of urban planning and design for safe and secure cities. This includes technical/physical measures combined with social approaches for preventing crime (from arson and burglary to violence and terrorism), incivilities and feelings of insecurity. European and worldwide standards and a worldwide organisation with national chapters are important foundations for this approach since worldwide, and European approaches and lessons always have to be tailored to – and implemented in – a local context.
